U-turn stuns group

A Health Select Committee's decision to reject an organ donor register is a disaster for those who need transplants, according to one campaigner.

The committee's long awaited report has recommended there should be no register at all, even though its own earlier recommendations were to set one up.

Andy Tookey of Give Life is stunned at the u-turn, which he says sets back the country five years. He says it is a major backward step, and he is seeking legal advice to see what can be done next. He says the status quo of using the driver licensing system remains, which is not ideal. That is because you can not state which organs you want donated, it is not legally binding, and if you happen to be a non-driver you can not state anything about what happens to your organs after your death.

Andy Tookey says the conclusion reached in the report is extremely surprising given it actually recognises there is a need for a register.
